Works In Progress: Personal Essay
Designed for writers currently at work on personal essay or memoir, this weekly workshop offers ongoing support in a constructive small group setting.
As a group we’ll discuss the stages of the writing process and effective habits for sustaining writing as a long-term practice. We’ll read contemporary examples of personal nonfiction and take a close look at techniques specific to our genre: narrative versus reflective voice, scene-making, working with memory, and creating self as character. We’ll share our work, generate new material through writing prompts, and offer constructive feedback to our peers. Each writer will receive detailed individual feedback from the instructor, personal assignments to further their work, and reading recommendations specific to their project.
This 10-week workshop includes one private consultation with the instructor, and written editorial notes on a complete essay or chapter.
Note: This workshop is open to writers who’ve taken Intro to Personal Essay or Creative Nonfiction at BWS. New writers interested in participating should contact Carla at firstname.lastname@example.org.
