Dear You: Essay & Memoir in Letter Form
Honest. Intimate. Direct. The personal essay and personal letter share a common language, and a common drive--the desire to connect.
In this 4-week workshop, we'll read essays and memoir written in the form of personal letters, from Karl Ove Knausgaard's seasons quartet to Mary-Louise Parker's Dear Mr. You. We'll spend time penning our own essay-letters to a variety of "recipients", and explore how the letter's natural sense of audience and familiarity can bring clarity to both our subject and our prose. We'll take a look at full-length memoirs composed as letters, and read lots of great advice addressed directly to aspiring writers, from Rainer Maria Rilke to Colum McCann.
All levels welcome. Ideal for those just starting out, and for writers looking for a new approach to personal narrative.
