Personal Essay & Memoir:
Writing Character

As in fiction, the most memorable personal narratives often revolve around people who've marked our lives in unforgettable ways.

The goal of this 4-week workshop is a simple one: to bring the people who occupy our memories--mothers, fathers, friends, lost loves--to the page with the same force that they exist in our minds.

Each week, we'll read iconic portraits from creative nonfiction writers and use their techniques--dialogue, scene, vignette, analogy--to develop our own original work. Class time will include reading, discussion, writing, and individual feedback. As our portraits take shape, we'll discuss what role our characters might play in a longer work.

All levels welcome. Ideal for those just starting out, and for writers looking to deepen an existing project.
