Personal Essay & Memoir:
Borrowed Forms

This 4-week workshop introduces writers to the “borrowed form” or “hermit crab” essay—an experimental essay that uses an impersonal structure to expose personal stories.

Together we’ll read essays in the form of instruction manuals, questionnaires, tests, recipes, prescriptions, dating profiles and more—and discuss how the most successful strike a balance between vulnerability and restraint. Through writing prompts, we’ll explore structures drawn from our daily lives, and try our hand at our own borrowed form essays.

Participants will leave with a solid understanding of this exciting form, the beginnings of a few new essays, and a powerful tool in their creative writing toolbox.

All levels welcome.
